Jenny Barnard-Langston JP BA (Hons), MA, DipCouns, NLG - Chair of Trustees

Bishop Otter Academy Trust aims to provide an exciting environment for children to enjoy a holistic education founded on Christian principles.  Jenny is passionate about equity of education for all youngsters, offering them the optimum life chances; she has a thirty-year history of involvement in education provision in Sussex, as a policymaker and is an experienced Chair of Governors.  

Jenny has served as a chair of governors in primary, secondary and special schools and FE colleges, and is designated by the National Governor Association as a National Leader for Governance (NLG).  Jenny is a consultant governance & leadership trainer working with Local Authorities and Academy Trusts She uses her skills to support Chairs of Governors and develop capacity within governing bodies.

Jenny is a founder Trustee of a Sussex based charity, Tony Barnard Foundation (TBF), which seeks to enhance the quality of life for children and adults with Learning Difficulties and where appropriate, their carers.  She enjoys life to the full, seizing opportunities to share her skills and encouraging others to have opportunities to extend themselves and their quality of life.

Christine Bartley

Christine has 20 years’ experience as a governor in primary schools within Brighton and Hove. She served as Chair of a Church of England primary school for 8 years and provided support to schools in her capacity as a Local Leader of Governance. Christine has a background in policy development and has also worked for many years for IT companies, as Head of Finance with experience in co-ordinating successful bids for government funding and currently as Head of Business Development.

Christine is committed to the christian ethos of Church of England schools which includes a responsibility to provide an inclusive education for local children.  She also supports schools working together to bring about school improvement and has initiated governor collaboration between schools.

Mark Brunet

Mark has had several disparate careers in different industries including the performing arts, marine engineering, the construction industry and economic development.

Persuaded to apply his financial skills as a governor in a small rural Church of England Primary when schools were first given control of budgets in 1988, Mark has seen increasing professionalism in School Business Management since then.

After working in that field himself, he now supports SBM’s across Sussex and Surrey for the Roman Catholic Diocese and has responsibility for ensuring the upkeep of the Diocesan education estate.

He also provides professional consultancy advice to both independent and state-funded schools, and is accredited as a School Resource Management Adviser for the DfE.

He has been a Trustee of Multi-Academy Trusts since 2016, firstly for City Education Trust and now for Aurora Academies Trust.

Trevor Cristin

Trevor is the Director of Education for the Diocese of Chichester.  He has been in this role for nearly 4 years and prior to that was a Headteacher in two local Voluntary Aided Church of England Schools for sixteen years.  Trevor is closely involved with all the Church Majority trusts in our Diocese and has worked closely with BOAT for a number of years both as a Headteacher and as a Director of Education.  Trevor is delighted to see BOAT come into full operation and is looking forward to serving on the Board.

 Lesley Hurst

Lesley works as the Assistant Director of Education for the Diocese of Chichester Education Team. Her areas of responsibility include CE school land and buildings, academisation and school organisation, project management and budgets. She has experience of working with government funding and therefore an understanding and awareness of the need for accountability in terms of showing how funding is used.

Lesley has been involved in school governance since 2015, having been a governor at a large CE primary school, a special educational needs school and more recently a large CE Secondary school.

Revd Martin Lloyd-Williams

Revd Martin Lloyd Williams became Archdeacon of Brighton and Lewes, and moved to Sussex with Jackie and Ben, in 2015.  He was ordained in 1994.  Martin has a wide experience of parish ministry having worked in Bath for 18 years, a city where all traditions of church flourish, and was also Rural Dean of Bath for four years.  He has been instrumental in developing the diocese’ vision and growth strategy over the last few years. He can occasionally be found at the Amex Stadium in the winter, at Hove County Ground in the summer or on the South Downs with the dog.

Claire Rivers

Claire has 47 years experience in primary education as a teacher and headteacher, three posts of which were in Church of England primary schools. Her last position was as headteacher at a Church of England Primary School, where she also led the Teaching School Alliance as Director.

Currently, Chair, on behalf of East Sussex two large collaborative networks, the Sussex/Brighton and Hove Learning Collaborative Network and the East Sussex Learning Collaborative Network which look to provide schools with school-to-school support and professional development, utilising system leadership. Claire believes passionately that all we do should benefit our children and young people and the networks have led to some exciting developments and research through cross-phase working, for example, the development of an online Blended Learning Toolkit.

Claire has worked as a facilitator for the NPQs since 2013 and continue to work as Co-Lead with the Sussex Coast School Alliance as Co-Lead for the ECF and NPQs. She is the RE Subject Network Lead and Facilitator for East Sussex and a member of the East Sussex SACRE as well as PSHE lead for the Wealden Education Improvement Partnership which offers schools a range of exciting professional development opportunities.

The Rt Rev. the Lord Bishop of Chichester

Dr Warner studied at St Chad’s College in Durham before completing his theological training at St Stephen’s House, Oxford. He was ordained deacon (1984) and priest (1985) in Exeter Cathedral whilst working as Curate of St Peter’s Plymouth.

He moved north to the Midlands in 1988 to be Team Vicar for five years in the Parish of the Resurrection, Leicester before being elected to be the Priest Administrator of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham between 1993-2002. During his time in Norfolk he was also priest in charge of Hempton and Pudding Norton between 1998-2000. He was appointed Honorary Canon of Norwich between 2000-2002.

Dr Warner was then appointed as a residentiary Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral in London, firstly as Canon Pastor and latterly Treasurer where he made a big contribution particularly with regards to the Cathedral’s connection with the art world (2003-2010).

He was elected as suffragan Bishop of Whitby in the Diocese of York in 2010 and served the parishes of the Cleveland archdeaconry which includes the contrasting communities of Middlesbrough and much of the North Yorkshire Moors, before his translation to Chichester in 2012.

He is a cyclist, enjoys the arts and is well known for his hospitality and welcome – an art he perfected when welcoming thousands of pilgrims to England’s Nazareth, as Walsingham is known.

Dr Warner is a traditionalist who has worked resolutely in recent years to encourage provision in which people of all integrities can remain together.

John Preston

John Preston, Diocesan Secretary.

John Preston is Diocesan Secretary for the Diocese of Chichester, having previously served a similar role for the Diocese of Worcester.  His previous experience includes 13 years as National Stewardship Officer for the Church of England and a number of marketing roles.  He has wide experience of trusteeship of charities across both church and educational sectors. 

Diocese of Chichester Education Trust

The Diocese of Chichester Education Trust (DOCET) was set up and incorporated in 2013 by the Diocesan Board of Education (DBE) as an umbrella trust.
